Sintering is one of the production processes for alumina ceramics. So, what changes will occur in alumina ceramics during the sintering process?
1、 Changes before sintering of alumina ceramics.
In this process, temperature control is very important and crucial for alumina ceramics. As the temperature continues to rise, the embryo will gradually shrink. However, the changes in density and intensity are not significant, and there is no change in the proportion of crystal particles in the microstructure. However, cracking is not easy to occur. Due to the complete elimination of moisture and binder, temperature control is crucial.
2、 Changes during the sintering process of alumina ceramics:
This is a sintered alumina ceramic that undergoes a relatively small change in temperature, with a continuous reduction in volume and an increase in density. Although there is not much change in grain size at the microscopic level, there is no point coarsening between particles, and pores are also decreasing. Moreover, the volume of the embryo decreases significantly due to sintering, resulting in deformation and cracking of the embryo.
3、 Changes in post sintering of alumina ceramics:
There is a significant increase in temperature, and the changes related to alumina ceramics will increase. The density and intensity have reached their limits and will not change again. In the microstructure, the proportion of grains changes significantly, and the pores are smaller. They are no longer connected to each other and exhibit relatively isolated pores.
However, some pores in alumina ceramics will still remain inside the crystals. However, as it is in the late stage of sintering, there will be many different adverse phenomena in the growth of the grains. To reduce the occurrence of these adverse phenomena, the most common solution is to add an appropriate amount of additives to control the growth of the grains.
